Thoughts on Music #10 - Györgi Ligeti

Györgi Sándor Ligeti 1923-2006
”…the first time I heard a Stockhausen piece was during the revolution, because jamming was stopped. It was on the 7th November 1956 and it was the first broadcast of Gesang der Jünglinge. The Soviets had come in and everybody was in the cellars, but I went up so that I could hear the music clearly. There were detonations going on, and shrapnel, so it was quite dangerous to be listening.”
-Hungarian composer Györgi Ligeti, quite the dedicated fellow, quoted in Griffiths, Paul: Györgi Ligeti (1983)
